Rakija; traditional alcohol of Montenegro

Good evening,

Montenegro has several traditions and rakija is one of them. The zest is like a raki from Turkey named "bogma". Here, when you go somewhere mostly they bring rakija with coffee servicing with small shot glasses

Today found opportunity to observe the steps of rakija production which was quite new for me. Since years saw the photos of the system on stores brochures and this time saw original one.

You put the fire to the bottom of the tank and put grapes (or even peach, apple, etc) on upper part and close it tightly. When starts to boil, the steam goes to the tunnel with pressure and reaches to the tank which is full of water. Could not see but neighbour said that there is a pipe inside of the tank with the shape of a spiral.

As far as I understood (still my Montenegrin is terrible), the steam goes to this cooling tanks and became rakija at the end.

This is the result.  The white liquid inside of the pan is rakija.

They are using this apparatus to check the alcohol level of the rakija. Mostly it is 37.5-40 degree which means very strong. Even one shot is enough to feel relaxed; hence please do not drive if you take alcohol.

At the end of boiling process they emptied the tank. Forget to ask but I guess the tank is copper (if not the colour changed due to grapes).

As an alcohol consumer, neighbour offered to try. It was a pleasure for me to see the process of rakija production and try it 😁

Once more wished to underline that; the alcohol tolerance is 0.3 promil at Montenegro. This equals to a beer or a glass of wine. In case of any accident even this can be against to you hence better not to drink alcohol if you are driving wherever you are.

Have a nice day,

Zel
